Community Animal Rescue Effort and The Pony Shop, Evanston, Ill., together cheer C.A.R.E. volunteer James Cha for fundraising work on behalf of homeless animals, with the presentation of a bicycle.

JULY 18, 2016/ EVANSTON, IL – Community Animal Rescue Effort (C.A.R.E.TM) has honored the fundraising efforts of Morton Grove, Ill., resident and long-time C.A.R.E. volunteer James Cha with the presentation of a Giant bicycle donated by The Pony Shop, a cycling store in Evanston, Ill.

The Pony Shop bicycle serves as the prize to the person who raised the most funds for C.A.R.E.’s annual Strut For Strays, which took place May 14, 2016, at Evanston Subaru in Skokie. James’ efforts on behalf of C.A.R.E.’s Strut event brought in $1,610, surpassing his goal of $1,500.

James, a resident of Morton Grove, Ill., has volunteered with C.A.R.E. for more than 15 years and has not missed a Strut outing, dog wash or Holiday C.A.R.E. Faire since he began helping look after rescue dogs for the organization. Most recently, James donned C.A.R.E.’s mascot suit in order to march in Skokie’s 4th of July parade.

C.A.R.E. President Linda Gelb applauds James’ accomplishment on behalf of the organization’s volunteers. “James continually goes above and beyond in his efforts to help animals,” Gelb says. “We thank James for his commitment to our mission.”

The Pony Shop Owner Lou Kuhn became involved with C.A.R.E. when his family adopted their second cat from the organization. “We wanted a dog-friendly cat, which is how we came to adopt C.A.R.E.’s ‘dog tester’ cat Jersey, now Katniss,” Lou says. “C.A.R.E. is close to my heart.

“I prefer to support organizations that are local and volunteer-based, like C.A.R.E.,” adds Lou, whose downtown Evanston bike shop serves cyclists of all kinds. “Volunteers put in a lot of time and commitment in order to make the group so successful. I don’t have a lot of [free] time, but if I were to volunteer, C.A.R.E. is the type of place I’d want to be at. Since I don’t have that ability, I like to help out [through donations from our shop]. It’s been a great relationship.”
